Rabun and Habersham counties are home to the beautiful Tallulah Gorge State Park. The gorge is nearly 1,000 feet deep in spots. It features trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as RV and primitive camping shelters. One of the popular attractions is suspension bridge above the Tallulah River that is accessible from the North and South Rim Trails. The Hurricane Falls Loop features over 1,000 stairs (if you go all the way to the bottom), and an almost 2 mile loop that begins and end at the park's Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center. The center features exhibits on the gorge's rich history and ecosystem. Educational events are offered, such as ranger-led night hikes, gorge floor hikes, lake paddles.
During the limited Spring and Fall whitewater releases, the Tallulah River is open to kayakers who wish to brave the very challenging rapids through the gorge. Onlookers can view them from various overlooks. Seeing the kayaks slide down Oceana Falls is quite spectacular from a distance, much less imagining it in person. They say speeds in excess of 40 m.p.h. can be reached before crashing through the giant wave at the bottom. The stairs to the put-in are also considered to be a Class V feature of the river. They have to get thier boats and gear down more than 560 stairs!
